Columbus: Hero or villian?

Based on your analyses of primary and secondary sources, answer the following question. Should we honor Columbus and celebrate "Columbus Day" or should we rename the holiday, perhaps "Native American Day"?

  1. christopher columbus was a horrible monster toward the native americans. he was so cruel that he tried to kill the native americans. personnaly i feel we should not listen to his journals details about "being nice" to the native americans. i believe we should celebrate native american day.

  2. I think that we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day. I think this because he treated the natives terribly. He did this because he was Christian and thought very highly of himself. He also didn't respect the natives. Instead of celebrating Columbus day we should celebrate natives day. To thank then for tolerating Christopher. Because if they didn't something even worse could have happened. Therefore we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day. Instead Natives day.

  3. Personally I believe that I have mixed feelings about Christopher Columbus. He seemed like an extremely daring man who didn’t take no for an answer and was to determined to fulfill his dreams and the tasks at hand. He went on many almost impossible voyages at the time and almost risked his life. He pushed through any of the obstacles that he encountered and made sure he did everything to the best of his ability. He also had many accomplishments throughout his life such as discovering new land to create a place for people to live. So he provided many things for people, which was a positive that Christopher Columbus had. The shame was that he had many disappointing events that he contributed to in his life. He did many horrific things to people such as murdering many of them just in the search of glory, and gold out of greed. He went hopping to each Caribbean island taking whatever money or gold he could find almost destroying whole civilizations at a time. He was also capturing and doing many horrid things to many Native Americans before killing them. He made them become slaves and worked in terrible conditions, which they didn’t deserve what so ever. I feel he didn’t even see them as human beings, because he was so racial towards them. He also took the credit for finding new land that wasn’t rightfully his, but he got the prizes not the real discoverers. This leads me to say that I suggest we keep Columbus Day because he did do some noble deeds but at the same time we should keep in mind the many terrible actions he performed. People should just become educated more about Christopher Columbus’s actual life and what he really did. These days I feel we only pay attention to how magnificent Christopher Columbus was but citizens should realize most of his life he was not liked for being an evil person. Even though what I’ve read says he was appalling to people I do think we have to think about the context of the time period he lived in where people were not as civil. He probably came across people that were not nice to him, so I think we can’t necessarily criticize him for what he did because maybe he didn’t know how to act or didn’t know what was right. Times were very different back then, than they are today so you have to put that into perspective as well as you are reading.

  4. I have mixed feelings about Christopher Columbus. He did some good, and some bad during his voyage. He showed positive character traits before he left for his trip. When he was denied to go his trip he still fought for himself and eventually did succeed, and was allowed to go on this trip. This shows that he didn't give up on something he thought was very important. Although when he was on his voyage he did make the Native Americans he ran into become his slaves, become Christians, pay taxes, and do hard labor. Also, he attacked entire villages and showed no mercy for anyone he killed, not even small kids, pregnant women, or even elderly people. While all this was going on he was writing in his journal that everything was beautiful, and he was being a good leader and doing the right thing. This action was just cruel and not right, he was lying. I'm not sure we should just take away Columbus Day entirely, because he did do some good and discover the other continents and lands, but what he did while finding them was very wrong.

  5. I think that we should honor Columbus and continue to celebrate Columbus Day, but we should also be aware that he wasn’t as great as we might have thought he was. I think this because Columbus was the one who found the Americas and opened them up to Europe. If he hadn’t found the Americas England would probably not have had people settling in the colonies as soon as it did. This could have possibly changed the future of our country. On top of all that amazing exploring and discovery, Columbus was also far out of reach of what we might call a good and outgoing person. He killed innocent Native Americans and also brought other Europeans to the Americas. These Europeans brought diseases which also killed the Native Americans. You might think that Columbus was a horrible person for bringing this entire onslaught. I agree, but he did, in some ways, also bring us the country we live in today.

  6. I believe we should continue to celebrate Columbus day, yet he did bring a lot of pain and suffering to the native Americans, so I think is shouldn’t be celebrated as strongly as is has in the past. I think this because Columbus did many important adventures in his life and each one he went on he knew he might not make it back to see his home again. Plus, on one of these adventures Columbus found America. Also, in our primary sources the writers made Columbus sound like he was a terrible man who brought slaughter to the natives. They could have been exaggerating a lot or just not telling the truth. Besides, if one of the writers had a grudge, or was an enemy of Columbus, they probably would have tried to make him sound bad. Yet, Columbus did make slaves after the natives didn’t do as he wanted them to do. Plus, Columbus seemed to become greedy for money. I think this because that’s the only reason why he wanted to find new land so he could find gold and other riches. This is what I think of Columbus.

  7. I think that we should still honor Columbus on “Columbus Day.” I think this because he was the one who found the “new land.” He was trying to find a new way to Asia, but landed in the Caribbean islands. He was the one who discovered America and if he didn’t no one would be here now. Even though I think we should still celebrate “Columbus Day” he was not the greatest person in the world. When he reached the America’s and found that the Native Americans were there he turned them into slaves and treated them very bad. He made them live in bad conditions. He would kill many Native Americans that did nothing to hurt anyone. Also when he arrived in the Caribbean the Natives who lived there for tens of thousands of years had formed civilizations and were unprepared for the attacks Columbus had on them. Even though Columbus wasn’t a great person he was the one who found America and I think we should still celebrate “Columbus Day.”

  8. I think that Christopher Columbus is a villian. For instance he slaughtered Native American indians. Then he wrote down that he was very kind to the indians. So he lied and he slaughtered the indians and that is very wrong. So with a strong opinion i think he is a villian.

  9. I don't know if he was nice or not. here is why based on the primary accounts one saying he killed the native Americans. although one says he welcomed them I don't know what to choose. but I do know Columbus went for the riches and traded with the Indians. just because one says he killed all the Indians and said he went for riches I don't know what one to believe for one I wasn't there and two you or I dont know if that person wanted Columbus killed or if he didn't agree with Columbus and for three I don't know if Columbus is lying to cover himself up for what he did or if he is telling the truth but that's why I cant tell if he is a hero or not.

  10. I think we should still continue to celebrate Columbus Day. I believe he was very cruel towards the Native Americans however, he did find America. It is a win and lose situation. He killed and worked to death many natives but he managed to set up a colony. Without Columbus America would not be where it is today, it could have taken hundreds or thousands more years for America to be found. Columbus described the land beautiful and peaceful while others claimed he raided villages slaughtering everybody (Baby, children, pregnant women, elderly ect...). Should we take away Columbus day because of this? I think we should still honor Columbus and his perseverance to find America. To honor the Natives who lived there we should also create a holiday for them.

  11. I think Christopher Columbus Day should still be celebrated. I think it should be celebrated because he was trying to do amazing things. He was trying doing what no one else would, sail to another land. He never gave up even when people said they don’t believe in him he just moved on and tried again. I know he did make the Indians slaves but, that was not against the law back then it was not frowned upon as much as it would be today. Christopher Columbus was changing the minds of the people in England. He found the stuff for England to trade. Christopher Columbus Day should be celebrated.

  12. I have mixed emotions about if we should celebrate Christopher Columbus day. I think this because he didn’t technically find our country. There were already Natives living there. He was the first one from England that went to America. Yes Christopher Columbus was very brave and did not take no for an answer but, he was very cruel to the Natives. He and his crew would take over villages and then kill all of the people that were living there. He then went and basically lied in his journal about what he did. When somebody thinks of Christopher Columbus day they usually do not think of the bad things that he has done. I know I didn’t until I learned more about him. This is why I have mixed emotions about celebrating Christopher Columbus day and or if it should be called Native American Day.

  13. I think Columbus Day should stay being celebrated,he was trying to get away from the king and find something new. But I dont believe in the fact that he, Burned all of the Native Americans Huts, Trashed everything they had, Raped all their women, and murdered every Native American on that land.I do think that we should learn more about what really happened instead of just the positives. I also think that the Native Americans should be Recognized as well. I mean like seriously...the Pilgrims would have died if Squanto and his people didn't help them with planting crops and harvesting, fishing so honestly they deserve a round of applause and a day for everyone to remember them for all they did. Also we get a day off school so, it's all good.

  14. I think that Christopher Columbus did not tell 100% of the truth and he did not treat the nativ e americans as well as he should have. From what I read about him what he said was all good. There must have been some problems along the way. Also I read about other stories written by a numerous amount of people that say that he treated the Native Americans very poorly. I do not think it went exactally as Chritopher Said it did but I think we should agknolege that he was one of the first to settle in the "New World". so I do not think that we should change it to Native American day for those reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think that we should still have the holiday so we get a school day off but I don’t think it should be called “Columbus Day”. I think this because although Columbus did discover a new world he also did many really bad things. For example he and his cohorts committed genocide on people. That is the deliberate killing of a large group of people, except those of a particular ethnic group or nation. As that one guy said in that thing we read and did homework on; Columbus killed many woman, children, men, and burnt down there villages which is genocide. Also, it was there land to begin with and they didn’t do anything to him. I also don’t think it should be called native American day because Columbus day is about him finding the new world and native Americans didn’t help him do that. But they should be recognized a separate holiday I think we should still have the holiday but it shouldn’t be called anything.

  16. sorry i didnt answer the question all the way i think we should celebrate bolth native american day and christopher colunbus day.

  17. I personally think that Christopher Columbus is a cruel person. First of all he technically wasn’t the founded of our country. The Native Americans were already settled here. Yes, he was the first person from Europe to come to our country, but that doesn’t prove the fact that he was the one to find our country. Christopher Columbus even had the nerve to come with his crew and kick the Native Americans out from where they were settled. He also killed most of the people that were already living there. But in his journal he said that his voyage was beautiful and that he was being a wonderful leader, but come to find out he was really being a mean, self-centered person who would fight ‘til the death. Sure he was strong and didn’t take no for an answer but that doesn’t give you the right to deport people from where they were living and kill them. I think that we should rename this so called holiday to Native American day. I think we should name it this because the Native Americans were really the people who founded the country that we are living in today. This is what I think about Christopher Columbus and what we should rename this holiday.

  18. NATIVE AMERICAN DAY!!!Bam! That is definetly what we should celebrate instead of Columbus day. Columbus was an evil, slithering, slimy rodent with no soul. He brutaly murdered some of the most innocent people without even thinking. If I had a time machine, I would poke a hole in his ship before all this happened. Sure, we might not have had the America we do today, but that's probably a good thing! Columbus made the worst decision possible when arriving at a foreign country-saying hi, then pulling out a sword and chopping people to bits! He might have made the first recorded trip to America, but he's getting way too much credit for creating one of the most devastating masacres in early history!!! >:(

  19. I think we should still celebrate Christopher Columbus on Columbus Day. I think this because he was determined to help his country and tried over and over to get funding for his voyage. He never gave up when people didn't believe him. I think he displayed a lot of admirable traits in doing so. Also, while he wasn't the first to find America, since there were already natives living there, he was the first to reveal it's existence to Europe. Revealing America's existence and potential as a colony was a critical point in America's history. All of people who were founders of America came to America because of Columbus.
Despite his horrible treatment of the natives, he showed courage and persistence, and he was an extremely important figure who shaped the history of Western Europe and America. This is why I think Columbus Day should still be celebrated.

  20. The truth is that I have various feelings toward Christopher Columbus. He did many horrid things to the Natives of the land. He killed many native. He didn’t care if they were kids, men, women, or pregnant women. He just killed them as if they were sheep in a slaughter house. Christopher Columbus was also greedy for gold. The result of his greed was that the Natives had to work in terrible conditions which killed most of the surviving Native Americans. The others that were left were sent to become slaves where they died of hunger and exhaustion. As if killing most of the Natives in the east, Christopher Columbus took all the credit for finding America when it already belonged to the Natives. Although he did all of these terrible things he died a couple of good things. If he hadn’t come across the Atlantic and come across America, many of us, if not all, wouldn’t be here today. He led people to become aware of this “new world” where many people came to seek a better life. So we owe Columbus for what America is today. I think we should keep Columbus Day but to make sure that people know the full story behind it. I still think we should have Native American day to represent the many life’s Columbus killed.

  21. NATIVE AMERICAN DAY!!! Bam! Columbus was an evil, slimy, slithering rodent. I wish I had a time machine so I could poke a hole in his ship before all this started. He killed Native Americans without thinking. He made the worst decision a sailor could make-saying hi to the natives, then stabbing holes in them! Columbus was just another greedy explorer who had to get his way 24/7. He's getting way too much credit for commiting this atrocious crime. Plus, he wasn't the first person to discover its beautiful land, purple mountains, and glistening seas, he was only the SECOND!!!

  22. I think we should continue to celebrate Columbus Day and Christopher Columbus. I think this because he never gave up in trying to help his country find new lands and by constantly trying to get the money for his voyage. Though Columbus did not actually "discover" America, (Native Americans were already there), he did show the rest of the world that America existed and told of all its resources it had. If Columbus had never miscalculated his route to Asia and accidentally landed in the Americas, we may not be here right now or even exist. Though Columbus was cruel to the Natives Americans, he changed the world and deeply effected our lives. This is why I think Columbus day should still be honored.

  23. I think we should celebrate Native American day. This is because Columbus was techinaclly not the first one to find the land but he took all the credit for it. Also he killed many of the indians who were the founders of the land. I think columbus should be a vilian in our history not a hero. He was a horrible man to the native Americans. Even though the indians lost the fight I think they are the real heros.

  24. I have mixed feelings about celebrating this day. I think it should be Columbus day but not fully. It also should be the Native American Day too. I think that because the Native Americans were on the land first, but Columbus has the right to have this day too. I think this because he wanted to explore and find new land. He was mean, but it wasn't the law back then so it wasn't really. SHAM-WOW KIDS there you have it!

  25. I think we should have a Native American day. I say this because the Natives Americans were the first ones on the land but Columbus was the one who came in and took over their organization that was going on.He also killed many Natives that were living on the land before he came in and took over many of these natives were women and children. I think Columbus should be thought of as a villain in history. This just sickens me every time i think of all of the horrible things Columbus did to these innocent Native Americans. The Native Americans will always be heroes to me.

  26. I don’t think we should celebrate “Columbus Day” because I don’t think it is right. For example Columbus did very bad things like controlling the Native Americans, he attacked the towns, and terrorized the people. After this whole thing blew over anyone who was left was distributed among the Christians to be slaves. I can connect Columbus to Hitler. For example Hitler did very bad things to people who were Jewish. Both Columbus and Hitler did very bad things because they could because they were “leaders” back then. I think we should celebrate “Native American Day” because they have done a lot of work. When Columbus came to “the New World” the Native Americans were very helpful they would trade with him, give him supplies, and if it were not for the Native Americans how would Columbus have survived, the Native Americans helped him so much and Columbus just took advantage of them. This is why we should celebrate “Native American Day” not “Columbus Day.”

    ReplyDelete
  27. I believe that we should still honor Columbus Day. I say this because even though Columbus didn’t spare a lot of people, and the survivors were turned into slaves, any other man in Columbus’s shoes would have done the same thing. In that time period, that was the thing to do. Also, Columbus only made the Natives into slaves in hope of them becoming Christians. This all happened because of his culture. As said in last night’s homework, any other Renaissance man would have done the same thing. Columbus probably didn’t intend to hurt anyone, it was just how he grew up. Not all of what Columbus said was true, but, we should still honor him for finding the place we live in today. Without him we may not even be here right now. Doesn’t that count for something?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have mixed feelings about Colombus. He did discover a trade route to North America. But, he also was mean to the Native Americsns. It shouldn't be Native American day because Colombus was the one that found the trade route. I also think that there should be more of a realistic explanation in schools. When I was in second grade or something, they never mentioned Colombus slaughtering the Native Americans. He slaughtered them and LIED. He said they were nice to each other. Also, the sources that are towards Colombus seem a little unrealistic. I mean come on? All Colombus' men traded with the Native Americans peacefully? Yeah right. Also, the sources that are against Colombus seem a little unrealistic. Why would Colombus cut up the Native Americans? It seems unrealistic, but more realistic than the other sources. So overall, I think it should remain Colombus Day. He is the one that found North America. But people need to know more about his slaughter on the Native Americans.

  29. Columbus was a man of traveling worlds, and he was a traveler who knew his way around the tides. But this man was blinded by his own words and dreams. I would not be surprised if he imagined "Columbus Day" while killing the Native Americans and stealing all they had, their land. He is said to be a hero, but he is not the true hero's of this day. Without the Indians he, and his crew and mates would have not been able to survive without the Natives who knew the land, and supplied them food. He met them, pretended to care and be a friend, and as their backs were turned he killed them. I don't quite understand why we celebrate a man who could think so highly of himself and see so much of the truth, and the real world. He could let the innocent blood shed and stain the grass, and the faults of these deaths lie in his hands.. and yet he celebrated himself, as we continue to today. He was a killer, not a leader. This is why i think we should celebrate Native American Day.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I do think we should continue to celebrate Columbus Day because he did some good things. However, he also did some bad things and the Native Americans found the land first, so they should be celebrated too. Columbus did fight to go on his trip even after he was not given funding the first time he had proposed his plan for his voyage. He felt he would find land that would help his country if he had the chance to explore. Even though he wasn’t technically the first one to find America; he was the first one to make England aware that the land was there. I feel that if he hadn’t been funded by England when he was another country could have been as courageous as Columbus and went to search for new undiscovered land; changing what happened in history. When Columbus got to the land and the Native Americans were there he didn’t treat them kindly. Even though it was the Native Americans land he had no problem with killing anyone: kids, elderly, and even pregnant women. He also didn’t think twice about making them slaves or do hard labor. I think we should celebrate the Native Americans as well as Columbus on Columbus Day since after all; they were the one’s that found the land first. This would show them that we appreciate what those Native Americans that were treated poorly by Columbus went through and that we are glad that they found America. That’s why I think we should continue to celebrate Columbus Day but, celebrate the Native Americans too.

  31. I Think Columbus could have been a hero but chose to be a bad person. For example he was heroic when he decided to be brave enough to try to find new trade routes when everyone else thought the world was flat. He is also heroic because he found the Americas which are huge important continents. Christopher Columbus should lose the privilege of people celebrating a holiday named after him because once he got to the Americas he did terrible things to the Native Americans that live there. For example in some of the writing from people other than Columbus himself, it said how Columbus beat and murdered the Native Americans. I have to say that I believe the writers that said Columbus did bad thing because of course Columbus would write good things in his journal to share with people to come to his new land that he discover and wouldn’t say that he took advantage of the native people. I can relate to when someone could have done good but then decided to do evil when Muammar Gaddafi was elected leader and then chose to do terrible thing to the people of Egypt. Not celebrating Columbus Day should be the punishment for the bad things Christopher Columbus has done.

  32. I have mixed emotions about wether or not Christopher Columbus was a hero or a villain. I think that he was a hero because of how he built up the courage to sail his ship to "The new World". This was a big deal because back then they thought the world was flat. Also I think he was a hero because of the fact that he made this remote area that was already filled with Native Americans thrive with his people ahead and in-charge of the original inhabitants. That is why I think Christopher Columbus was a hero. I also think that he was a pretty lousy hero as well. I think this because, from my knowledge, he killed many of the Native Americans instead of trying to work out a treaty. He also used his advanced technology in weapons to conquer the Native Americans. On top of that he also made the Native american women and children be the slaves of the Spaniards that survived the "taking-out" of the Native american people. (Many Spaniards survived this due to the technological advancement over the Native Americans. This shows how he just took over their whole race. That is what makes him seem like a pretty lousy hero to me. All in all Christopher Columbus was a very brave man.

  33. I think that we should celebrate both Columbus Day and Native American Day. Personally I think that Columbus was a bad person. Columbus did some good and some bad things. The Native Americans were the first people on the land then the big, bad Columbus came and took over what was not his. The Native Americans were treated poorly by Columbus and his men. Should we really celebrate someone who terrorized people and killed them? Or should we respectfully celebrate and remember the people who sacrificed their lives? The Native Americans need to be remembered. Everyone today is just obsessed about Christopher Columbus and how HE discovered land, but he didn’t. That is why I believe that we should celebrate Native American Day.

  36. I think that we should not call this day “Columbus” Day, but a different name. Why should we celebrate someone who enforced slavery and violently harmed and killed the Native Americans? Columbus attacked Native Americans- men, women, as well as children, and took those that remained to be slaves for Christians. He claimed he was “spreading Christianity”, when really he was spreading slavery. He attacked innocent people who did nothing towards him in his rampage to find the gold that was supposedly in America. He said one thing and did something totally different. He didn’t even tell the King or Queen of Spain the whole truth of what he did in the New World. Whenever Columbus wrote to them he made it sound like everything was terrific and he was an amazing leader, having no conflicts with the Native Americans. If I were the King or Queen of Spain, I would have gotten suspicious of Columbus and sent other loyal to me with him to tell me the truth. The only reason anyone knows who Columbus really was and what he really did is because others talked about and wrote about what they witnessed or heard of him doing. We should not celebrate some lying, murderous, gold-seeking adventurer, but the Native Americans, the ones who really settled and “discovered” America.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have many different feelings about Columbus, but I still think we should keep "Columbus day." When he was denied of his trip to the west to find a new trade route to the Indies, he persevered and found a new King and Queen to sponsor him. Also, Columbus founded America and without him, the Puritans wouldn't have had anywhere to go after they separated from England. This would mean that no colonies would have been created that started this great free country. On the other hand, Columbus did some terrible deeds like killing Native Americans in the most horrible of ways. For example, when Columbus discovered America, he island hopped through the Caribbeans destroying and looting villages. He was so cruel that he didn't spare anybody, and when he killed people, he cut them to pieces and made the survivors become slaves. The diseases his men had also wiped out many of the Natives. In my perspective, Columbus did some terrible things to not be celebrated, but he did discover our country and in a sense, he deserves some credit for that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think Columbus did what was necessary. He didn’t want to kill the natives; he just wanted to discover a water route to India, and to be remembered for being a great explorer. He wanted the riches of “India.” If it meant enslaving the natives and killing innocent people, he would just be forced to do so. In the primary account from Columbus, he said the natives were very eager to trade with him. He didn’t mention killing and enslaving them. His main purpose was to spread Christianity and to open a trade route. When it comes to renaming the holiday, I think we should rename it discovery day, or America day. This would honor Columbus for his discovery only, and not for bringing slave traders and conquistadors to take over. In my mind, Columbus tried to balance his wrongdoing with discovery, spreading religion, and obtaining riches.

  39. Even though Columbus was cruel to the natives, I believe that we should continue to celebrate Columbus Day in honor of him. What he did to the natives, though, was barbaric. He had no right to arrive in their land and massacre all those innocent men, women, and children. On the other hand, Columbus was the first European to discover America. His courageousness should be celebrated. But, I also think we should recongize all of the natives that were lost, and not completely dedicate the day to Columbus. The day should be shared in rememorence of the original inhabitants of America and first European to travel to this unknown land.

  40. I think we should Celebrate Native American day. Christopher Colombus was a bad person. He took down the house. He killed kids, women, and pregnant women. The Native Americans had everything going good for them then Colombus came and ruined everything. I dont think there Should be a Colombus day. Native American day.

  41. I have mixed feelings about celebrating "Columbus day" or changing it to something more friendly towards the Native Americans.I think that there are many different stories about what really happened between Columbus and the Native Americans.Positively thinking: Columbus sailed to America across the Atlantic Ocean, spread the Christian Faith and brought the European traditions to new land. Negatively thinking: he was said to have cruelly, murdered many innocent Native Americans, enforced slavery on the remaining and therefore destroyed their culture. This situation is similar to the Obama administration. When unemployment is at an all time high he is trying to create more jobs. The Republican Party is against his ideas but the democratic party is all for it. This relates to the people who think of Columbus as a hero or a villain. There are both pros, and cons for both situations. This makes it hard to come to a conclusion. Overall I don't think that the holiday should be called either, 'Native American' day or 'Columbus day' but a combination.

    ReplyDelete
  42. i don't know, but i think it should be both Columbus day and native american day. that is because the native american was the founder of the land (because they were already there). but Columbus took a big part of it too. he was the first one to find the trade rout and found the existence of america so people would know more about it. but he also kill the native Americans. even though he wouldn't survive with out the native Americans's help. so that is why i think we should celebrate both holiday. but celebrate them differently because it was a different story. the native american was already there, in their home land so they get the credit. and columbus was the founder of the trad route their and "found" the existence of america.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think that Christopher Columbus was a villain and I feel strongly that we should be celebrating Native American Day instead. Bartolome de las Casas was a Spaniard who wrote about the horrible things Columbus did to the Native Americans. One of the horrible things was attacking the towns they didn't spare anyone. Bartolome de las Casas said the following talking about Columbus and the other Spaniards actions toward the Natives, "..not only stabbing them and dismembering them but cutting them into pieces as if dealing with sheep in the slaughter house." I don't understand how someone could find him a hero? I have always though a hero is someone who saves life's, Columbus ended them. I understand how people are thankful to Columbus because some of us might not be here if it wasn't for him. But Columbus wasn't the first one to discover the land. The Native Americans where clearly the first ones on the land, so Columbus didn't have a right to disrupt the community that already existed there. This is why I feel Columbus was not a hero. Columbus day should be changed to Native American Day because it is unfair to the Natives that we celebrate a day where so many of there people died.

  44. We should celebrate Native American day, because Columbus was an evil person who had no problem murdering the inhabitants of the land he claimed to have discovered. He killed innocent people living in their own land instead of trying to come to a peaceful agreement. He and his crew cut people to pieces, killed kids and pregnant women, and brutally murdered the Native Americans. I don't think we should celebrate genocide, instead we should celebrate the people that died.

  45. I think that we should celebrate both of them. I say this because the Native Americans found the land first. But on the other hand Columbus had a right to take some of the land. I kind of lean on the Indians side because that was there land until Colubus came. Also Culumbus was a rude person and would ruin and take over lifes. But on the other side Columbus did alot, if we didnt have him our life style wouldn't be the same as it is today. Columbus was a christian so he did believe differant then the Indians. Either way if we didnt have these men i wouldn't know what our life would be right now. This is why i am in the middle of both.

  47. I think we should continue to have this holiday and have school off but, instead of Columbus Day we should rename it. I think at times Christopher Columbus was very cruel but he did do some good things. What he did that was very cruel is that he slaughtered many elders, pregnant women, kids, and men that did not deserve to die. Another horrific thing that he did was that all those natives that survived that massacre he slaved. He forced them to practice Christianity, and never allowed them to practice their own religion. He put them up to hard labor and many of them were starved to death. Before and during his voyage it seemed that he didn’t even had the thought of what he did when he got to land. Also what he wrote in his diary was not true. He lied. In his diary he explained how great this were going and how good of a leader he was but really none of that was true. So I believe that Columbus should not have the honor of having a day named after him. It should be given to the Native Americans. Therefore being called, “Native American Day”

  48. Imagine this picture in your mind: you are Christopher Columbus, exploring the new world you discovered. You come across a…. village? It certainly doesn’t seem like any village you’ve ever seen. The houses (or maybe they are tents?) are oddly shaped. You hear a strange noise, some sort of voice, to your left. You turn and see a strangely dressed man. He wears only a skirt made of some sort of animal skin and he has paint on his face. He is also talking in a language you don’t understand. The first thing that pops into your mind is, “Egad! This man is different. He may not even be Christian! Hmmm… He has brown skin! Maybe he’s related to the animals found in Africa! It matters not. He is obviously just as inhuman.” You order your men to attack. The Americans are taken by surprise and don’t even have time to reach their weapons. One short battle later and the Native Americans, the “inhumans”, are all dead, the village stripped of everything valuable. Christopher Columbus was a monster who killed the Native Americans just because they were different. We should NOT celebrate Columbus Day, but rather, turn it into a memorial day of sorts, honoring the poor souls who were killed on account of the Europeans oversized egos.

  49. i have mixed feelings about Christopher Columbus. he did some good things and some bad things. but i think we should maybe i dont know maybe celerbrate bot holidays like Columbus day and Native American Day. Like we celebrate both of the holidays at the same time. He was very cruel is that for some reason he slaughtered many elders, pregnate womens, kids, and men that he had no reason for them to die. And he had the men die during work and the pregnate womens die of exhustion and hunger and the kids i think dies of hunger. to me i honestly dont think anybody deserves that. so i am so saying that we should change the name "Columbus Day" to "Native American Day" because of what Columbus did.

  50. I do not believe that we should have a Columbus Day. Yes, of course, Columbus did discover a route to "America" (other wise known as the Canary Islands, in actual terms), however it was the native americans were there even before Columbus. The biggest reason that this day shouldn't be about Columbus is because of the one thing about him that strikes me in a negative way. That is the way that he treated the Native Americans when he got to their land. I'm not sure if this is actually true becuase of the mixed stories from the different points of veiw, however in one of the stories it was said that Columbus, and the group of people that came with him, murdered the Native Americans, that happened to live where he discovered. He took their valuable possesions (like gold). The remainder of them that he did not kill, he enslaved. This particiluar encounter bothers me the most beucase Columbus intruded their land, killed their people, and enslaved the few that were not dead. They had absolutley no right to do this horrific crime and most definatly should not have a day honoring the time that it happened. If this perspective of the day Columbus landed in America proves not to be true, then of course there would be different circumstances. However at this moment with that story in mind, I think that this day should honor the Native Americans that had to endure all the pain an unreasonable punishment, there fore naming it "Native American Day".

  51. I believe that we should continue to celebrate Columbus Day, but also celebrate for the Native Americans. What he did to the native americans was wrong, and the women too. He had no right to take away all of the land and murder people for it. I also don't think that he did all of those terrible things. But I think we should still celebrate it because he was the first one who discovered America. His bravery should still be reconized. But, I also think that he shouldn't get all the credit because the Native Americans were there first. I think it should be celebrated for the Natvie Americans that lost their lives and for Columbus being the first person out of Europe to discover land.

  52. I think that we should still continue to celebrate Columbus Day. Even though he made some bad decisions he also made some good decisions. When Columbus originally came up with the idea to go a different way to go to Asia he was denied support from the King of Portugal but he didn't give up. He kept with his idea and went and asked the King and Queen of Spain for support and he received it. This plan then ended up discovering the Americas. Yes you may say that the Native Americans had already discovered it and were living there but before Columbus found it, it was unknown to Europe and it would have stayed unknown. But I do not think that the Native Americans should go unnoticed. I think that we should also celebrate the Native Americans on this day.

  53. Personally i think that we shouldn't celebrate columbus day because he treated the natives horribly. he did this because he was christan and thought very highly of himself. christopher was very greedy for gold. the result of his greed was that the natives had to work in terrible conditions which killed of left many native americans injured. the other native americans that were left were taken as slaves where they died of hunger and exhaustion. i still think that we shouldn't celebrate columbus day but rather celebrate the native americans who were killed.

  54. I think that we should celebrate Native Americans Day instead of Columbus Day. Sure Christopher Columbus developed new trade routes and spread European religion and culture to knew lands. However, in doing so, he also did many bad things such as slaughter/enslavement of whole tribes. The Natives even helped the pylgrims by showing them where land that is good for growing crops are. If not for the Native Americans' help, some of the colonies might not have survived. This is why i think the day should be dedicated to the Natives and the good that they did.

  55. I feel that we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day because he was a evil person and did horible things to native americans. He would destroy their villages and kill them. Also he would force them into slavery and he stole from them. Yes,you could argue what Columbus did was very brave by finding America but what he did after he got their was horible. So instead of celebrating Columbus day we should celebrate Native Americans Day because they were the ones that truly found the land first.

  56. I think that we should not necessarily celebrate Columbus day, but instead we should celebrate Exploration day. We shouldn’t celebrate Columbus day because he did horrible things to the Native Americans on the Caribbean islands. Christopher Columbus not only killed the Native Americans because they were different, but he tortured them and made them slaves in order to convert them to Christianity. I am a Christian, but if my friend was of a different religion, I would be okay with that. I would call Columbus day, Exploration day because we shouldn’t just celebrate Christopher Columbus, we should celebrate the fact that people explore and find great places on their explorations. Back then, there were many great explorations like Ferdinand Magellan’s and Francis Drake’s. Why only celebrate Columbus day if he only discovered the Caribbean? Magellan and Drake traveled all the way across the earth and yet we still don’t have a Magellan day or a Drake day. I feel that honoring Columbus and giving him a day is celebrating a man whose actions are cruel and inhuman. Exploration is great, but in my opinion, we shouldn’t center it around Christopher Columbus.

  57. I think we should celebrate Native American day instead of Columbus day. Columbus wasn't the first to discover America, although he took credit for it anyway. Also when Columbus arrived he killed most of the Natives and stole from them, destroyed homes and towns. He murdered pregnant women and children with no mercy. Who would want to celebrate someone like him? He also had lied to everyone, as he was writing nice things about the land, people, and himself in his journal. Maybe the Spaniards wouldn't have "sponsored" him if they knew he was going to do such horrible things so he wrote things that made him seem like a hero (which he clearly isn't). It should be called Native American Day instead, the NATIVES were already here, they had settled here. We should really be honoring them.

  58. I think we should celebrate Columbus day. But I also think that the indians should also get showed some respect. They found the land first and they let columbus settle their. Also Columbus did some pretty nasty things. So I have mixed feelings about Christopher Columbus. In some ways he is a good person but in others he wasn't so great. I think we should pay more attention to the indians rather then Christopher Columbus truthfully.

  59. I believe Christopher Columbus was a hero and not a villain. I say this because Columbus was a fearless explorer who risked his life to explore the world. Columbus never gave up on finding someone who would provide finance for his trip. He worked very hard to conduct his trip and never looked back. Christopher was a pioneer who started the globalization of our world. He was keen to go farther than anyone has gone before and to take the skills and knowledge of the Renaissance to change the world for ever. Many people argue that Columbus started. This is false because he did not start slavery. Back then people had different beliefs and ideals about slavery than we do now. Slavery was already a popular trade. Many others of our famous leaders also had slaves. These include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Mary Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson. Ten of our US presidents owned slaves in their lifetimes. Christopher Columbus made one of the most important geographic discovers ever recorded. Columbus is a hero and we should celebrate Christopher Columbus Day.

  60. I think that it should be called native American day because of all the suffering they had to go through. Christopher Columbus had tortured and enslaved a billion native Americans during these times. He also forced the native American slaves to switch to the Christian religion. I believe that people should be able to believe whatever they want to believe and what Christopher Columbus did was against this and natural rights that are given to you in your birth because natural rights are the rights to live your life, have liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and that goes against all of this. And that is why I think it should be native American day instead of Columbus day because of all there suffering and they still managed to put up with Christopher Columbus.

  61. I feel that we should celebrate Native American day because Columbus killed many innocent and helpless Indians. This horrible day should at least remember the Indians in some way shape or form. On the other hand Columbus still found the Americas, but he should not have treated the Indians like that.
Columbus also forced native americans to become christian and slaves. This is why I think that Columbus was a villain.

  62. I thought that Colombus did not do anything that any other settler would have done. I think this because he had no idea what to do except follow his instincts and do what he thought he should have done.So i had a feeling that Colombus was a hero cause if he had not done what he did back then we woulden't be here were we are right now.For example if Colombus dident go and trade his goods for the Indians goods, the Queen would have no respect for him because he would have no proof that him and his crew found these indians and interacted with them and did somthing with them.

  63. Honestly, in my opinion, I think we should still celebrate Columbus Day. Sure he killed hundreds of Native Americans, but he founded a trade route to America. If he hadn't done that we most likely would not be here right now. America would probably be inhabited by Asians. Or even Russians. Have you ever looked at a map closely? You will see that Russia is practically touching Alaska. That's why we should still celebrate Columbus Day.

  64. Yes and No. It's hard to say. Columbus was a murderer but he did discover America from the view point of Europe. If he hadn't we might not of discovered North America until much later, which would of allowed another group of people find it. But he also disrupted the lives of the natives and slaughtered thousands. He took slaves and brought disease as well. But he still "found" America and he worked hard, so we should give him some credit. We shouldn't get rid of Columbus day because he helped Europe come to America.

I think that we should and shouldn't have a Columbus Day because Columbus landed on North America while he was trying to reach Asia. In America he murdered many of the Natives. Men, women and children were slaughtered and taken as slaves. That I think is very mean and outrageously cruel to do to people. His discovery of America connected Europe, Africa and the Americas. Maybe we should also have a Native American Day because they were really here first and Columbus being of European background tried to erase their existence from history-not cool.

  66. I think we should celebrate Columbus Day because he gave us money in the new world. Although he was a bad person he helped us make the new world a bigger place. Bartolome de las Casas said that he was kill men, women, and children in thier sleep.

  67. I think we should celabrate both Columbus day and Native Americans day. I think we should Celabrate Columbus day because even though historians are starting to prove that Columbus wasn't even the first European to settel the Americas and he killed and hurt many Native Americans if it weren't for him it would probably would'ev been harder for us to settel. I think we should celabrate Native Americans day to remember and forgive them for what they had to go through not only when Columbus arrived but all throughout history.

  68. We should name it Native American day because the Native Americans were the first ones there. Also because Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas, it was actaully the vikings were but they only discovered the northeastern part of America. Also he was actaully trying to land in Asia because they had better goods and so when he landed in America he thought they were indians so he called them indians. Lastly is because he took many Native Americans and killed them or made them slaves.

  69. I think that we should call this holiday, "Native Americans Day" and have school on this day too. We all know that Colombus was NOT the first one to discuver america, but the Native Americans were, and they should get the credit by the holiday being named after them. How would you feel if you did a project or something with a partner, and did not get any credit, by not having your name put on? That would suck, right?

  71. i think columbus took creidt for what other people did to find amercia. well he didnt even find it the native americans already lived there so i think it should be called native americans day because they were the ones who had been there for all thoses year. if anything i think we should frown upon columbus because all he did was kick people out of there houses and take their land. also he wanst even trying to get to america so he should get creit for somthing he didnt even plan on doing.

  72. I think Columbus did some good things for America, I mean he "found it" as you would call it. But he did do some cruel things to the Native Americans. So, basically, I have mixed feelings for Christopher Columbus.
