“You have won your revolution”

President Obama stated the above words to the people of Libya upon the demise of their former ruler Muammar Gaddafi. The people of America may very well have once heard these lines from someone. Read the following articles. As we see the following countries beginning their journey to democracy, re-evaluate what democracy really means to you. Be sure to use connections from class and include advice for those now following in our footsteps. Follow your Blog Rubric to get full credit.

  1. To me democracy is when the people have a say in what goes on in the government. they may not have full power but there voice is still heard. But most importantly they have a say in how they are ruled and how they live their lives. I also think that democracy to me is that i can tell my government what i want and even if they don't go forth with my wish they still have heard what i have to say and have thought about it.

  2. Democracy means that the goverment lets the people have a say. By this i mean that people can vote for the president that you want, that the people cen tell the president hes wrongand tell him if he is doing a good job or a bad job and if he is doing badly then you dont have to vote for him when elections come back around, and we can speak freely and not get in trouble.by that i meanon a webpage or newspaper that the goverment is unjust and not fiar and wont be arrested because of the Zenger trial and in the Zenger trial Zenger spoke about the king wich back then was illegal and went to court and he was found innocent and made a law the freedom of the press.

  3. I think that democracy means To have a say in government. To be able to have a freedom of speech and have a choice of government. If the way I wanted it to go didn't happen I still had a freedom of speech.

If the way I wanted it to go didn't happen I still had a freedom of speech. Like for example if the government in your opinion is not doing good than you can have a say on it. You can sorta control the government, but not fully.

  5. I think democracy is by the people, for the people. That means it's up to us to elect a president that will keep our country up and running. But it's also our responsibility to give a bad president and or government the boot. As far as rights go, we can share our opinions or different ideas to support or cunstructively criticize the government and or president. So to me, democracy revolves around the opinions and ideas of the people.BAM!

  6. i think democracy is to have a fair say in your government and say what you wish about the president, house of representatives, and the supreme court, or the state government etc. and if it gets too bad you can overthrow the government.

  7. I think that democracy means that everyone has a say in the government. Even if the majority of the voters vote the opposite our voice is still heard and taken into consideration. We also have the right to say what we want where as if we were in China and I said something bad about the government then I would be shot. Here we can say if we dislike Obama because we have the right to say what we want when we want.

  8. I think democracy means that everyone that lives in a community of some sort should have a say in what happens in it. If other people think differently of you then you both equally have a say about each opinion. In America we all have the freedom of speech but if we lived in a communist government you would get in trouble for speaking out against the government. Like if i said i don't like Obama at all I would still be heard by people and nothing could happen because of freedom of speech.

  9. I think that democracy means that everyone has a say in the government. we might not have full power but our voice is still heard. In the word democracy the word demos means "people" so the people have the right to vote, have elections, and select representatives. In the Zenger trial peter zenger wrote bad things about the governor so he was really saying bad things about the king. Peter stood trial for printing criticism of New York's governor.Peter was not-guilty so now we have the freedom to right whatever we want in the newspapers. So if peter zenger didn't write bad things about the governor we wouldn't have freedom of the press or our freedom or speech.

  10. Think that democracy is a form of government where its people have a right to be part of their government. For example, in the word democracy the word "demo" is there. The word demo means "people." That is why you hear people saying our government is "for the people by the people." Our government allows us to elect our president by having elections and voting. We also have freedom of speech which cannot be taken away from us since it is one of our natural rights. But this wasn't so true in the Zenger trial. When Peter Zenger wrote bad things about the governor in the newspaper because he thought everyone should be aware of what was going on, he was put to trial. This was because since the King selected the governor, the bad things Peter wrote about the governor also applied to the King. Peter Zenger was sentence to be not guilty. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't have been able to receive freedom of press. To write anything we would like in a newspaper as long as it's true. This is another form of freedom of speech.

  11. I think that democracy means that everyone has a say in the government. In the word democracy, the word "demo" is the stem of the word. The word demo means "people”, and in a democracy people have the right to vote. In our government, the people have the privilege to vote, and elect the president that we / they desire. We also have the freedom of speech which the government can’t take away from us, since it’s 1 of the natural rights. But it was the opposite in the Zenger Trial. Peter Zenger published bad things about the governor and what was going on into a local newspaper. The governor did not like what Peter had said about him so they went to trial. Peter was not guilty. If it wasn’t for Peter Zenger, we wouldn’t have the freedom of speech or even freedom of press (people have the right to print or write anything). So that is what democracy means to me.

  12. I think democracy is that the people have a say in their government. The people have the right to have their voice heard and democracy allows that. One example of democracy that we learned about in class is the Zenger trial. Peter Zenger wrote his opinion about the governer of New York and the king and published it in the New York Weekly Journal. He was sent to trial but was not found guilty. This is because he has the right of press so he could say what he wanted about the governer and king with being arrested. The Zenger trial affects us today because without it, democracy wouldn't exist or wouldn't have been established until much later in time.

  13. Democracy is the exact opposite of a communism. What it means to me is that people get to vote and have a say, and actually mean something in the government. It gives us a big in how things work in or country. It also lets us speak our thoughts, without being repressed. Instead of us all being another person, we actually have meaning. It is also ,to me, the symbol of America, because we are so into having a democracy. If America was a dictatorship or a monarchy, I don't think we would be as good a country. This is because if we don't like one leader, we can chose another, and don't have to tolerate and bad leader.

  14. To me democracy means having a say in how you want your government. You may not have full say in what happens, but your ideas and beliefs will at least be considered. Also, "demo" is in the word democracy. Demo means "people", and when there's a democracy the people have a say in their government, and are able to vote for what they want. In class we talked about the Zenger Trial, where there was a guy who worked for the newspaper, and he posted his opinion about the New York governor, or something, and he got a lot of criticism about it and he had to go to court over it. He won the trial, which started the whole idea of Freedom of Press. This relates to democracy because people are allowed to write what they want about they're government or political figures. In Libya, they have just earned their freedom by killing Gaddafi. Now they face the challenge of building their own government from the ground up. They now have their dream of 42 years; a say in how they live. This is what democracy means to me, and how it relates to class and the world today.

  15. I think democracy means everyone should have a say in the government. People should be able to vote for what they want to instead of going along with everyone else. If I tried to something bad about the Chinese goverment in china i could be killed. We can say whatever we want about our president and nothing will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  16. To me democracy means having the right to elect our own government. The root word of the word democracy is demo. Since demo means “people” that implies that the people would have a say in the government which we do when we vote. Even though we can’t vote yet our parents get to so they are basically deciding for us what they think will be best. For people that do vote even if the thing they are for doesn’t get passed or the person they want doesn’t win they are still being heard. If you don’t vote and you don’t like what’s happening you should think about voting because you realize that you would like to have a say in what is going on in the government. In the U.S. we have been lucky to have the choice whether we vote or not. In Libya, people had no choice in what was going on and they hated it so they rebelled against Gaddafi and that started the change toward getting a democratic government. They didn’t have any rights at all. Now, they are going to start to hold elections to form a constitution and elect people in office such as the president. We have had to privilege to get to vote for a long time and now Libyans will get this too. As you can see, to me democracy means that the people have a say in the government.

  17. Democracy means that everyone should be able to have a say in their government. You should be able to vote for what you want instead of being forced to vote for something you don't want.

  18. Democracy is important in our daily lives. There are many examples like the fact that we are able to vote for a class president. Democracy means you have a say in the government and other things that heavily influence our lives.

  19. I think that a democracy means that the people have a say in the way we want to organize and run our government. We are allowed to vote on whatever we want to and can decide on the influence for our lives. In the word democracy there is the word "demo" which means "people", so we can have a right for what we want. Also there is freedom of press which means that we have the right to express or choices and/or feelings. If they just captured Gaddafi who was running away for a long time, Libya now has to make their own government and run it well.

  20. I think that a Democracy is made by the people, for the people. Basically this means that the people are responsibile for electing a government and other things that heavily influence our lives.

I think a democracy is having choice. It is having a say in your government. It gives certain rights to the people. Some of them are: freedom of speech and freedom of press. A connection I have is freedom of press to the Zenger trial. The Zenger trial was when Zenger posted the truth in the newspaper. This is an example of the people having a say in their government. The people wanted to have freedom of press. Also "demo" means people. People having a say is what democracy means to me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think that democracy means that the people can have a say in the way we run our government. We can have the right to vote and express our feelings about the government. In class we talked about the Zenger trail. In the Zenger trial, someone wrote about a corrupt Mayor in the newspaper. He was sent to court after people said he could not do that. Zenger was not found guilty and that started the freedom of press and speech. In Libya they killed Gaddafi who let one one write bad things about him. The people that did would have probably gotten shot. Now in Libya, people can make their own decisions about who to run there government.

    ReplyDelete
  23. In the articles, Obama is basically saying that every government should be fair, and that is what I think a government really should be like. That was the opposite in Lybia because they didn't have a say in what their leader did, and like what we learned in class about neglecting something, when they killed their leader, they had an inch to take and instead of not trying, they took a mile. This is how the question relates to class. Also, the Zenger Trial also has some connections to this. Zenger wrote a book saying things about the government that they didn't like, so they brought him to court and didn't give him a chance to say about his feelings that he had about the Freedom of the Press. I also think that Democracy means by the people and for the people- it is ran by people to help all people, no matter who they are and everyone has a fair vote. This is what I think democracy really means.

  24. I think that democracy means To have a say in government. Plus to be able to have a freedom of speech and press and have a choice of government. Also the people should get to vote for who represents them. Therefore people should basically run the government by making laws and voting for who becomes the Representatives. Plus the laws should affect everyone and every person should be treated equal.

  25. Docmacracy means to me that people have a say in there government. I fell like we should have a right to express what we feel. This is kinda like then zenger trial a person said something bad about there mayor so he went to court in court he stated he was only telling the truth so he didnt get in trouble, this led to freedom of press. This is like gadhafi because people said bad thing about him but they did not get in trouble because of freedom of press.

  26. To me democracy means people, citizens, have freedom. Democracy has the word “demo” in it and demo means people. “People” have the right to decide whom they want for President and they have the right to vote, of the age. You are born with natural rights so as soon as you take your first breath as a newborn you have rights! You are able to speak however you want because you have freedom of speech. For example in the Zenger trial he told his opinion, he thought it would help the people if they knew the truth but it really was bad. After the trial the jury said that he was not guilty of going against the King because it was his opinion and he had freedom of speech. So that is what democracy means to me.

  27. I think that democracy is political or social equality. It is when a community has say in their government. Two examples of democratic states are Canada and the United States. In a democracy people have the right to vote, freedom of speech and freedom of press. "Demo" means people in latin and is the base of democracy in more than one way, the people have say in their government and things that heavily influence their lives. In Libya people disagreed with what was going on and the desicions that were being made. They didn't like the way their government was being run so they rebelled against Gaddafi and in return they started to form a democracy. They didn’t have any rights at all before, now they are going to start to hold elections to form a constitution and elect people in office such as the president. So to me a democracy is where people have say in their government and things that have a great influence on their lives.

  28. A democracy is when people have a say in their government. In the word democracy, there is the word "demos" which is Latin for people. People have the right to vote and other rights such as freedom of speech and freedom of press. One example of someone expressing freedom of speech is in the Zenger Trial. In this trial, Zenger wrote the "truth" about a corrupt governor in a newspaper. This is just one instance of people having a say in their government and expressing their thoughts about what is going on in their government and country.

  29. To me, democracy means to have the freedom to express what you have to say. The root word of democracy is demo which means that people should have a say in what goes on in our government. In the United States we have the opportunity to vote for who we would like to be president. We get to have a say in who we want for president. Even if the person that you want doesn’t win, you still know that you got a say in who you would like to be president. The people in Libya didn’t have a chance to get this opportunity to vote for who ruled and they were furious about it. The Libyans were so mad about it that they rebelled against Gadhafi. They wanted to be able to have a chance to have a say in who their ruler is going to be. They had to deal with Gadhafi being their ruler for 25 years! Now that Gadhafi is dead they have a chance to vote. This is what I think democracy means to me.

  30. I think that democracy means that all people have a say in government. Many countries have a democratic government. In a democratic government people have the right to vote for who they want in office and to represent their country. For example since the US has a democratic government we were able to elect president Obama as our president and Senator Joe biden as our Vice President. Also in democratic government people have the freedom of speech. This is kinda like the zenger trial because a man said something disrespectful about the mayor and got sent to court about what he said. At the end of the trial the jury found him not guilty because he had the freedom of speech. That is what I think a democratic government is.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think a democracy is where eveyone has their own rights and they rule the goverment, the goverment does not rule the people. Also the people have a freedom of speech so they can say anything they want and not get in trouble with the law. This is just like the Zenger Trials. When Zenger wrote in the newspaper writing the truth and he went to court. The court proved him not guilty because he was using his freedom of speech and if they proved him guilty then that would be going against his and everyone elses freedom of speech.

  32. I think democary is where people have a say in their government. In Libya we see what happens when one person takes control and average people have no rights. After many years the Libyans are finally fighting back. This reminds me of when our country had its revolution over 200 years ago. Hopefully Libya will be able to have good government like we do. But it is possible that democracy won't work out and they could get stuck with another dictator. When I read they article on the death of Libyan dictator, I was happy for their country. I just hope that the democracy works

Also, points are deducted if you are not following the RUBRIC (for example: knicknames are NOT OK for this assignment-FIRST NAME and LAST INITIAL are required for points). Putting knicknames or fancy/goofy things will only bring your grade down. Although this is online and a different atmosphere than a classroom, it is still a required assessment (meaning IT COUNTS... yes, ALL of it).

  35. To me, democracy is any organized community (classes, towns, countries, etc.) that gives every person the right to have a say in any decisions that community makes. In a class, for example, students might vote for activities the teacher wants to do or for things like whether or not they should have homework. Democracies, in my mind, also evenly distribute the right to have a say in decisions being made among everybody. Whether people in that community are a different race or maybe a different gender they all deserve a right to be heard within their government. In our class we learned about peoples’ natural rights. I believe that any democracy takes peoples’ natural rights into consideration when writing constitutions and deciding how their government will run. Any countries that are now following our footsteps should definitely make sure they keep in mind that all people have the same rights to ensure they don’t make the same mistakes that their past leaders may have made. Governments in the making should also be sure to elect more than one person in charge to spread out the power.

    ReplyDelete
  36. In my opinion, democracy means that people have the rights to vote and say to the government. That means that you could speak out to the government. In the past you would not be able to speak out, you would get arrested if you do. We also have the rights to vote instead of being force to vote for something you don't want. In this month (i think), we read an article in class about Libya. It said that the people didn't like how to government is running the place and the desicions that they are making. So they rebelled against the leader and what they got back was a form of democracy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think democracy is a form of government where all people have a say in how the government is being run. The word “demo” in democracy means people have a say in the government. The government doesn’t always do what you say, but they listen to your opinions and sometimes learn from them. Here in the United States, we have the right to vote and have a say in what we want. Other countries don’t have that opportunity. For example, in Libya, the people didn’t have a say in who they wanted as ruler. They were so angry at their ruler, because he became a dictator, they rebelled against him. If Libyans had the chance to vote, lives would not have been lost. Now that their dictator is dead, and the rebellion is over, Libyans will have a chance to express their opinions. This is what democracy means to me.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think Democracy is having a government that listens to your ideas. The government might not agree with your idea but the government will look at your idea and consider it. One example of democracy we learned about in class is the Zenger trial because he said what he thought should be changed and what was wrong with governor. Zenger was brought to trail but was not guilty because they released people should have freedom of speech. In America we have freedom of speech witch I think is a part of democracy. We have a democracy in America so I could say whatever I want about anything. I could also send any ideas for a better government to the government. I think democracy is a big part of how America is so well governed.

    ReplyDelete
  39. To me democracy means to have a say in your government. The root word of democracy is "demo" which means people. This suggests that the people would have something to do with the government which we do. We become involved with the government when we vote. Even if what you voted for didn't win your vote was still looked at and taken into account. We also have the freedom of speech and the freedom of press, which means that we can say or write whatever we want about our government as long as it's true. An example of freedom of press was the Zenger trial. In the Zenger trial a guy who worked for a newspaper printed an article about the Governor of New York and got arrested. When he was put on trial he was found not guilty because he had the right to write anything that was true about the Governor, and express his feelings. This has contributed towards us being able to have a say in our Government. The people of Libya didn't have a say in their government and they were being ruled by Muammar Gaddafi. They didn't like how their government was being run and the decisions that Gaddafi was making so they rebelled. Now that Gaddafi is dead they can start a democracy and run their government differently. They are now starting to have elections and votes. This is why, to me, democracy means for the people to have a say in their government.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I believe that democracy is any organized community that gives all members of the community a freedom to say how they want to be governed and a say in decisions that are made. The ideas and beliefs of the people in a democracy are always heard even though they are not always followed. The word democracy comes from two Ancient Greek words. The word “demos” means people and the word “kratos” means power. This means that democracy is the people’s power. In a democracy all people have an equal say in decisions that may affect their lives. People have a say on who they want to rule them. For example, in the United States of America all people over the age of 18 are allowed to vote for who they want to be president. Voters also elect governors and representatives. In are class we have learned about both people’s natural rights and the Zenger Trial. Democracies really take people’s natural rights into consideration. Democracies allow people freedom of speech about their governments. People can speak however they want to about the government. John Zenger wanted to write his opinion about the governor of New York in his newspaper the New York Weekly Journal. He exposed the truth about how the governor tyrannically ruled. Zenger was tailed for “trash talking” the king because the king elected the governor. Zenger was found not guilty. Zenger’s trial established the Freedom of Press Act. People of the press were now able to say what they wanted about the government as long as it was true. This has made way for people’s freedom of speech about their governments. My advice for countries following in our footsteps, such as Libya, is to spread the power between more than one person. This will prevent communism and will better represent the people of your country. Try not to give one person too much power or they might rule in the same way Gadhafi did. And finally, you should always listen to the ideas and opinions of your people. You should treat all people’s opinions equally.

    ReplyDelete
  41. To me democracy means that the people have a say in whom and how their government is run. An example of Democracy is America where the people vote who runs the country. Also the word Demo in Latin means people so the word itself has to do with people. Libya did not have a democracy when Gaddafi was ruling because they disagreed with the way he ruled the country and treated the people and when there was protesting he had them killed. Now they are starting a new democracy and electing new electives. I can relate to being in a democracy because at school a group of kids voted that there should be 8 kids to a table and the rule got passed and now you can sit 8 people at a lunch table. This would not be successful if Muammar Gaddafi was the principle because he wouldn’t have listened to the kids and would have at least given us detentions for asking. Obviously Democracy is a very important part of running a country.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The idea of a Democracy is to spread out the power so not just one individual is making major decisions for a whole country. It is a type of government made up of the people, by the people, for the people. This means that any citizen living under the laws of their country's democracy has a say in it, no matter what their race. Also, any citizen can become a congressman or representative. (if they were born in America than even the president) all they have to do is get the majority of votes. All of the people in the government were once just regular citizens that got elected. Lybia didn't have a democracy, but instead a dictatorship. It was just Qaddafi making huge decision about the history of his country. The people felt that they should have a say in decisions that would directly affect them, so they rebelled.

    ReplyDelete
  43. To me democracy means the people have a say in their government. The word "demo" means people. An example of democracy that we learned in class would be the Zenger trial. Peter Zenger was a writer for the newspaper. He stated his opinion on the governor of New York and was sent to trial. He was found not guilty, because it was his opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This started something called Freedom of Press. Freedom of Press is the right to state your opinion in a public way. This is related to democracy because it is allowing people to state their opinions on government officials. This effects us today because if Peter Zenger never stated his opinion on the governor, then we wouldn't have democracy.

  45. To me Democracy is a way that everyone can have a say in their government. In class we talked about the word democracy. The stem of the word is “demo” which means people. We learned about the Zenger trial which was about a man that spoke out against the government in a New York newspaper. He was sent to trial but not found guilty because of one of the amendments which is freedom of press. Also in the government people are able to vote the people that are in charge out of their spot. Such as next year when president Obama goes up for reelection we can either say that we want him back or want him out of his presidency.

  46. To me democracy means that people have a say in what they want in a government. It is important because then the people will be happy that they have a say in what the government does. An example of democracy that we learned in class could be the Zanger trial, when the writer stated his opinion on the governor of New York and was brought to court. Because everyone is entitled to their own opinion, he was found not guilty. So because of this, there is now Freedom of Press, the right to state your own opinion. The Zenger trial is related to democracy because it allows people to express their own, individual opinions in public. This effects people today because if no one ever stated their opinions, we wouldn't be able to today.

  47. To me, democracy means a type of government where the people have a right to choose who will be governing them. Democracy has free and fair elections with everyone getting an equal chance and right to express their opinions on who should be elected and why. This reminds me of when we talked about the Zenger trial in class. Zenger expressed his opinion on the government and won us the right to do the same; freedom of press. Now freedom of press is a critical part of democracy. I would advise the people of Libya not to settle on an idea for their government that's "good enough" but to fight for ideas that would do the most and be the best for their country and their government.

Democracy is when the right to rule a country or civilization is not given to one individual or group within that community. Rather, it should be shared by all who take part in said community. Some rights that are usually given in a democracy are the right to help adjust your government and also to be able to state your opinion. The Libyans did not have that right while under the terrible rule of Gaddafi. This is why it’s so important that these people had a revolution: They’re taking their lives into their own hands. WORD! 49. Demoncarcy means to me that it could be a changeable government in some arguments that the law had made or the president had done something. It could also mean that people had a right to vote and do some free activies. I had also though democracy had also meant that it can involve people into situations.
An example of is the Zanger trial. I also had thought democracy had meant that it could be a problem in some situations. It depends on what the people are saying because they have a right of free speech. And the people also had a right to not do what they want but to make their own descions beside the government making their choices.

  50. Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible voters have the right to give a say in the decisions made within it. Democracy is so important to have in our country and some people may say that it is essential and a basis to stability in one's country. Democracy evolved from the root word "demo" meaning "people." This shows that if people don't get a full say in what goes on in the government then it is not considered a democracy. People don't fully realize that being heard is
important, whether or not your ideas are implied or listened to by tons of people. All that matters is that you are able to speak your mind let people get your thoughts into their head to agree or disagree with them. Our democracy is unlike Libya's in that their government is a monarchy. They have no say what so ever in what happens to their life and who or what controls them. They are expected to follow whatever is put in front of them. Libya tried to rebel against Gaddafi but he refused, but now since he is dead Libya is trying to strive towards a Democracy so the country can be overall a better place. A connection towards class is that in the Zenger Trial we learned about in class. In this story a writer for a magazine found out the governor was bribing so he wrote about it in the newspaper. Since writing badly about a public figure was illegal, then he had to go to a trial but the jury in the end said Zenger was not guilty. The jury thought it was good of him to tell them all what he figured out so people were aware of the situation. This way people would be able to do something about getting a new person in charge who is a good person. This is what I think Democracy means.

  51. To me democracy means by the people. In ancient Greek, people gave us all the “gifts” like science, writing down history, math, and democracy we learned about last year. In democracy everyone’s voice matters and is hear. That is why it is called democracy: “demo” means “people”. For example, we have representatives from each state that we vote for so we have say in who we think should be the representative and that person helps speak for us, also we technically vote for the president. When we were writing the constitution those were ideas that early Americans came up with. We also have the right to say what we want and to let our voice be heard. That is what democracy means to me.

  52. After reading these articles, I believe that democracy means a government for the people, by the people, and about the people. I think that because it is clearly portrayed in all of the writings. For example, in the second article given, about the death of Ghaddafi, its talking about the rebels and how they took over the government. That shows that the government is “by the people”. It’s for the people because the people of Libya created it after the dictatorship was demolished, and they made the kind of government they all wanted. In addition, its about the people because the Libyans wouldn’t create another dictatorship that is all about the ruler, they would create one that included them too. This situation is also very alike the situation in Tunisia, how for the first time they are going to have a government for the people, a real democracy. This is like what we are learning is class because were studying the colonies and how they broke off from England. The dilemmas in old America, Tunisia, and Libya are almost exactly the same. They all have to do with the people of a country getting angry with the current government that is a dictatorship and how they are treated terribly. Then, they all rebel and end up breaking off from the dictatorship and creating a democracy. However, the one thing that is different is that the United States had to start from scratch in making a government. All they had ever experienced was a dictatorship with a king telling them what to do. In Tunisia and Libya, on the other hand, they had many models, since most countries have democracies already. Besides that, the situations are very alike. Also, I think that all other non-democracy governments should become a democracy government because its really the only government that is fair to everyone that has been come up with so far.

  53. To me, democracy means, the people. This is what democracy means because that is who democracy is ruled by, us as American citizens. The president and congress may be powerful people in our government, but it is actually us who make the decisions. We are the ones who vote in elections making us the rulers of our own government. I can connect this to class because when there was a choice to have either Fun Fridays or Funday Mondays, the teacher did not make the choice, we voted for it. In conclusion, we, the people, are democracy.

  54. In my opinion, democracy means that the people have a say in how the country is run. All the decisions are based on the people. The people vote for the president to hold office. (Executive branch) They vote to elect senators and representatives to make decisions representing them in congress, including presenting, passing, or failing bills which could become laws affecting the entire country. (Legislative branch) And these citizen-elected senators and representatives vote to elect Supreme court justices. (Judicial Branch) Obviously, the people have a very large say in the government.
Also, I think that democracy means that the government has responsibilities, and the people have rights. In many other forms of government, there is an unequal balance of rights and responsibilities between the people and the government. That is why I think that democracy means that the people decide how things are run.

  55. I, personally, think that Democracy means to have a say in government. There have been times in our past history where people did not get a say in their own government, the rules they had to follow, and who would be enforcing and creating the laws. Even now there are some places around the globe that don't have a say in their own government... the key would in this being "their" because its not the monarchy's government, nor the presidents. It's the *peoples* government. And that is something that many people seem to forget sometimes. This is why we have "freedom or speech" and "Freedom of the Press." Interestingly the word "demo" is a Latin word with the English translation, "people." In other words, "demo" is the base of democracy so people is also the base of democracy. Before, i mentioned 'Freedom of the Press' which was produced by the Zenger Trial. What brought such a scandal was the fact that a writer for a magazine discovered that the governor was bribing people. This is illegal, and laws apply to every person. President, king, queen that doesn't matter your a person as well and its your government to and so you have to follow it just like everyone else does. Since writing badly about a public figure was illegal the simple writer decided that the public had a right to know the truth, so he went to court. There was a big dispute about the whole accusation but in the end the jury said that Zenger was not guilty. They later explained that they thought it was good of him to tell them all what he figured out so people were aware of the situation. So now as long as it is true, people can write their opinions and discoveries or gossip, etc. This is what democracy means to me, the people.

  56. I believe that democracy is any government that gives all of its people that it governs freedom of speech, right to vote, and freedom of press. This is important because to keep the citizens happy, you have to have free and fair elections that lets them know that they have a say.Even the word democracy comes from two Ancient Greek words. The word “demos” means people and the word “kratos” means power. This means that democracy is the people’s power. Also, democracy allows citizens of a community to pick the best candidate instead of having a forced dictator that doesn't know what they're doing. This reminds me of when we talked about the Zenger trails because Zenger spoke out against the judge who was a fraud and got away with it, just like how the people of Libya spoke out against Qaddafi and won by taking him off the throne. I suggest that the new government of Libya take advice from its people, and to have open discussions about its new policies.

  57. A Democracy is where people can vote in an election for the person that they want to represent them in the Government.Democracy envolveds from the root word "demo" meaning "people". In Americas History people have fought for the freedom to vote. This is still a capitalist society not Socialist. That means the Owners of Businesses and Factories are not controlled by the Government yet. The protesters down on Wall streat want more equality within the Economy, but Capitalism rewards those that work hard. Our Democracy is different than Libya's Democracy because we can have a say in the Government and the libans don't have a say in the Government so that they can be Governed by anyone who tells them I am a good leader you should vote for me. Libya tried to get rid of Gaddaffi and he ran away because he didn't want to hear what the Libans were going to say because he knew that they wanted to kick him out of office and he thought by hiding somewhere people couldn't get him that his worries were going to go away, but they didn't The Libans searched everywhere for Gaddafi and finally found him and they killed him and now Libya is trying to find a new Government that will rule them. In connection to class we learned about the Zenger Trial, the person viewed his opions about a Governer. In a Democracy thers is "freedom of speech." The good thing about Democracy is that it provides freedom for the citizens of that Country. This is what I think Democracy means.

  58. In my opinion a democracy is a form of government that benefits all the people that are under it more than any other form of government by giving the people a say in the government. The latin word “demo” is found in the word democracy in the base of the word and in English it means: people. This tells me that the word democracy has a meaning that is very obvious: a form of government that benefits the people under it. That is what i think the word democracy means.

An example as to why democracies are the favored form of government involves the country of Libya. The leader of Libya was very recently over-thrown by his people and killed because he ruled as a dictator. When people are ruled under the “iron fist” of a dictator they have no say in anything involving their government unlike in a democracy in which the people play a very important role in the government. The people in Libya wanted what people in America have, for instance, on the terms of government. So what they did next was form a group of rebellions and fought against the ruler of Libya’s soldiers in the streets of Libya. After months of fighting the rebel forces overcame the power of the Libyan forces and are now in the process of forming a new government. That is a an example as to why democracies are the favored form of government.

That is what a democracy is to me.

  59. What democracy really means to me is that people have a say in the government. They should be able to vote for their leaders and control what goes on in their countries. Also everyone is treated equally and no one has too much power. This means that the government never has more power than the people of that country. The government has responsibilities and the people have right and that makes an equal balance of power. This is what democracy means to me

  60. What a democracy means to me is that people ca nsay whatever they want about the government.People should have rights t ovote talk and basically anything they have to say about the government. People should be equally treated and no mater what way that they look they should be treated the same. The people should have the same power as the government. The government has more power than people but it doesn't mean they have to have more power. This is what the democracy means to me.

  61. To me democracy means “for the people”. For example, in the word democracy it has the word “demo” which means people, and democracy is a form of government. Therefore I see it as government for the people, what the people want, and have a say too. I saw a form of democracy when I heard about the death of Muammar Gaddafi and how the people have the responsibility to form a new government. A government that can be ruled by the people instead of a dictator that makes all the decisions and rules that the people of Libya don’t agree to. In the democracy they are trying to create the people will be able to vote for what they think is right. They will also have to establish a constitution (like we did in class) that can’t be broken, that everyone will agree to doing. This is just like the colonists had to do when they first came to America and settled here. Both groups must have/ had to establish this to form their democracy. This is what democracy means to me.

  62. I think that democracy means that everyone has a right to have their opinion in law. We have a right to say as we please, the freedom of speech. We can say we hate the government and no one could stop us from saying that. This is probably because in class we heard about the Zenger Trial, which was a man that worked in the press and he told everyone what he thought about the governor, and how he was accepting bribes. They didn't like his article and he had to go to court but he won the trial. So people realized they should get to say what they want because its not a communist country.

  63. What democrocy means to me is that people have freedome and the right to vote without being disclude from anything for your race, religion,or if your a male or female
also what we can say without being stopped and not allowed to say and to choose out taxes "NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION".

  64. I think that Democracy means, to have a say in what goes on in/with the government. You get to speak even thought you are not always there main target on there to-do list. Everyone has freedom of speech, like for when it is time for elections, you get to vote. That is what freedom of speech can do.

  65. to me democracy mean people can have a say in the way they live their life. for example who they want for president and other government choices. also it mean that people have the right to say anything they want and write about any one with out being fined or arrested. this reminds me of the zenger trial, a man spoke out against the king in a new york newspaper and was sentenced to a trail which he ended up winning but this started the freedom of speech . another thing is that no one is above the law. the laws have to be followed by every one , every where. this makes are country a fair place to live in.

  66. To me democracy means that people can have a say in the Government no matter the case. It means that people have the right to elect a leader (president) to guide them through good time and bad. Un like before the English settlers came to claim this land as America, Great Britain was ruled by many harsh rulers and they had no say in the government, any type of politics, or laws that were established what so ever. In fact people were not even aloud to speak of the king in a harsh way. Than on man stood up for what he believed in and wrote his truthful opinions about the king. He was taken to court, this court case was called the Zenger Trials. Within this case the Governors passed an amendment, this amendment was know as Freedom of the Press. It states that anyone can say anything about the the king within reason. Even though the king was not fond of the rule, it had to be done to keep peace between him and the Colonists. But that is why I believe they started a democracy, so there wouldn't be any reason for arguing. Everyone has a say in the government. But one person can not over through the Government, but if a people really feel that a change needs to be done that they will be heard. That is why America is America, land of the Free.
